'Roses' - by Elizabeth G Provan
A Victorian artist who specialised in flower paintings. She lived at 189 Hill Street in Glasgow and was greatly influenced by the Glasgow School of Art. She exhibited in London at the Royal Academy with titles including; Gladioli (1884), Autumn Flowers (1886), Flowers (1891) and Roses (1892). She also had works accepted annually at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours, Glasgow and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. In this flower study realism has only been hinted at, free and spontaneous in its execution and painted with such obvious enjoyment that the artist's love of flowers is very apparent. This work is signed and presented in the original period frame.
